Présidentielles 2007 November 3, 2005Posted by BiB in Uncategorized.
At last, a political battleground with a bit of glamour and some proper ideological rivalry. It’s all making me miss Paris. These riots might mark the official launching of the 2007 presidential election campaign. At least with de Villepin and Sarkozy both in the race, Le Pen should be prevented from pulling off his second round stunt again. Sarkozy was a relative junior when I lived in Paris all those years ago, but it was already clear he was destined for big things. De Villepin was a nobody back then, but he’s stormed into the nation’s political psyche, seemingly in a good way (and his command of English makes him go down well on the international scene, of course) (not that that will be a factor in helping the French decide whom to replace Chirac with). It should be a battle of political heavyweights, with charm and venom in equal measure. I’m already looking forward to it (and so must all those French folk be who had to go and vote for Chirac through gritted teeth in the second round last time round).
