Breaking Belanews September 18, 2005Posted by BiB in Uncategorized.
My joy at this photo from this site that I uploaded here knows almost no bounds. I have been engaged in a polite and engaging correspondence with spadar Kanstancin Szastouski, who runs the site as a hobby, but also for didactic purposes, and he tells me, just for a quick extra Belarusian history lesson – sorry to harp on about this – that, yes, that’s a synagogue, an Orthodox and a Catholic church on the photo BUT that the Orthodox church used to be a Uniate church. Does this make anyone else as excited as me? For the uninitiated, Uniates are Eastern-rite Catholics, if I’m not mistaken, i.e. beholden to Rome but the rites are Orthodox in form. Yet further evidence of Belarus’s crossroads history.
